Porter Regional Hospital staff accepted a Gold Plus level award from the American Heart Association on Wednesday, who recognized the hospital’s achievement in the AHA’s Get With The Guidelines program for heart failure. Porter is the only hospital in Northwest Indiana with this achievement.

The hospitals of Community Healthcare System have been named among America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety by the Women’s Choice Award®. The award signifies that for patient safety, Community Hospital, Munster, St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center, Hobart, are in the top 16 percent of 3,179 hospitals in the country.

Bishop Donald J. Hying, of the Gary Catholic Diocese, presides at a Mass Feb. 2, celebrating the 120th anniversary of the arrival from Lafayette of three Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Admiration in Hammond, who founded what today is Franciscan Health Hammond hospital. The sisters arrived during a blizzard, at the invitation of city founder George Hammond and community leaders, to meet the Calumet Region’s health care needs. Many of the more than 100 sisters in the order today attended the service in the hospital chapel.
