According to the American Community Survey in 2016, 82,413 individuals in Northwest Indiana 18 years of age and older do not have a high school diploma. Northwest Indiana region adult education programs have stepped up to the challenge to help more individuals attain their High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma by offering free HSE preparation classes. Over the last year, area adult education programs have had over 60% achieve HSE and/or significant increases in academic performance.

On a Sunday in October for the past 14 years, Albert’s Diamond Jewelers has invited the community to gather together and share in a common vision: A world free of Multiple Sclerosis (MS.) This year, on October 7, Albert’s will hold its Annual MS Auction. Every cent raised through the auction will go toward research to prevent the progression of MS, restore lost function, and ultimately end the disease. The Crown Point Community Foundation is accepting grant applications. Grants from the CPCF’s endowment funds will be made to nonprofit organizations and community projects which serve the South Lake County service area of Crown Point, Cedar Lake, Lowell and Winfield. Fields of interest which will be considered for funding include education, health and human services, civic affairs, preservation, conservation, arts and culture.
Fishing, once a means to survive for thousands of years, has transformed into a traditional craft that offers more than just a good catch. What better way to spend a sunny Saturday morning than to take a group of 35 children fishing, helping them to appreciate the lifelong values found within the hobby of fishing. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana, United Way of Porter County, and Dr. Larry McAfee from McAfee Animal Hospital united to create and sponsor Take a Kid Fishing, hoping to ignite a new passion for the children involved. The event took place on Dr. McAfee’s property on August 11.
